Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is one of the most effective mantras of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva is also called the God of Death in the Hindu scriptures. Therefore, Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is also called the mantra of victory over death. Mahamrityunjaya Mantra has been written in many scriptures including Shivpuran. Origin of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra

It is believed that Mahamrityunjaya mantra was given by Lord Shiva to sage Markandeya. He was a devotee of Lord Shiva. There is a story that his parents Murkand and his wife were unhappy of being childless. So, they decided to do long and severe penance to make Shiva happy. Lord shiva was impressed so he appeared in front of them and gave blessing to have a son of a short span of 12 years.
That time both murkand and his wife was very happy. They were blessed with a son but as time passes away, they started becoming depressed. Son Markandeya came to know about the truth. He decided that for the happiness of his parents, he should get a boon of longevity from Lord Shiva. Markandeya made Mahamrityunjaya Mantra and started chanting mantra in Shiva temple.
On Markandeya 12th birthday, Lord Yamraj Came to pick him up. When Markandeya saw Yamraj, he loudly started chanting mantra and clung to the Shivalinga. Yamraj tried to drag the child from Shivlinga then Lord Shiva appeared and showed anger on yamraj that how he dares to draw a devotee from Shivalinga who indulge in my mantra practice.
Seeing the fierce face of Mahakaal, Yamraj got scared and clarify that he was just doing his job. When Lord Shiva anger subsided, he granted his devotee Markandeya longevity and stop yamraj not to take his devotee life. Lord Shiva stated that whoever chant Mhahmrityunjaya Mantra, will always get the fruitful results.
Why this Mantra should be performed?

What precautions we should take while performing Mahamrityunjaya Mantra?

- Mahamrityunjaya mantra should be done with clean body and mind.
- It should be chanted properly which means if it is difficult to pronounce mantra clearly, a pandit ji can perform it for you.
- It is good if mantra is chanted 108 times a day. This mantra should be chanted infront of the picture or idol of Lord Shiva or one can use Mahamrityunjaya Yantra while lighting the diya.
- This mantra should be chanted with Rudraksh mala.
- Before starting mantra chanting, one should offer milk on the Shivalinga.
- Mahamrityunjaya Mantra should only be performed by facing towards the east.
